Portrét byl objednán na oslavu 50 let členství krále Karla v Drapers‘ Company, jedné z nejstarších britských charitativních organizací.
Umělec Jonathan Yeo uvedl, že jeho cílem bylo vyzdvihnout „monarchii 21. století“, ale dramatické pozadí přirovnal Jonathan Jones v deníku The Guardian k „růžovému psychedelickému výplachu“ a Kate Manseyová v deníku The Times k „hrůzné popravě“ v londýnském Toweru.
